This week I chat with Danielle Spurge founder of The Merriweather Council. Danielle is a maker herself and a craft business consultant who helps entrepreneurial makers leverage their talents and create sustainable craft based businesses. In this episode we chat about how her after college plans turned into her building a full-time handmade business, why she decided to shift into helping other handmade businesses grow their brands, her tips for how you can go from hobby to business and of course how she is taking care of herself as an entrepreneur. In a time where everyone is wanting to launch a new tech start up, I’m excited to have Danielle on the show to share how you can make a living from your handmade products!

ON HOW SHE WAS ABLE TO KEEP SALES CONSISTENT & MARKET HER BUSINESS

Danielle grew her brand in the beginning by selling her work at local crafts shows, a space she was able to use to not only get her products in front of her ideal audience but that she also used to learn more about what her customers liked and disliked. She also mentions how she really leverage using Etsy as a tool to attract customers to her brand online.

DANIELLE SHARES WHY SHE DECIDED TO TRANSITION INTO OFFERING SERVICES

After getting tons of questions from other makers on how to grow their business on Etsy, Danielle decided to give her advice more intention and began offering coaching services for other handmade business owners!

DANIELLE’S ADVICE ON GOING FROM HOBBY TO BUSINESS

Danielle says that you first have to begin treating it as a business. Not only does that help with your mindset but with a lot of the decisions you will have to make. She also mentions considering the things you have to manage in your life as well. A lot of the confidence you need will come with feeling secure in your plan. Whether that means having a certain amount saved or planning to go from working full-time to part-time to fully in your business. You have to figure out what works specifically for you!
