EP 76: How Krystal Scott Is Building A Social Network For Black Professional Women Through The Well
This week on the show I chat with Krystal Scott, founder of The Well, which is a social network that provides community and connections for professional black women. In this episode Krystal shares her journey from pursuing a career in public health to digging into entrepreneurship. How building the brand slowly behind the scenes has helped her to grow the community to over 300 members and also get a better understanding of what her audience wants from the space. Krystal also shares her tips for black women who may be the only one ‘s in their professional spaces on how they can network and build community.
on the inspiration behind building the well
After hosting networking events through her personal blog, Krystal had an epiphany to create a business accelerator for black women. After being apart of an accelerator herself, she realized that The Well could be so much bigger. During her career in public health Krystal was typically always the only black woman in her office. That inspired her to expand The Well into a social network that provides community and connections for professional black women. A space to help women get to know each other with intention.
WHY KRYSTAL HAS TAKEN TIME OUT TO BUILD THE PLATFORM IN BETA BEFORE FULLY RELEASING
After publicly announcing business ideas in the past that never came to fruition, Krystal came to a point where God showed her that if The Well was what she wanted to do, then she needed to do it the right way from the start. For the past year, Krystal has been building and growing the platform behind the scenes before its public launch this upcoming July. The Well was in what you call a private BETA mode where the brand was accessible on social media but the community only accepted new members 3 different times during its beta launch. This time helped her to figure out if this platform was something that her audience wanted.
KRYSTAL’S ADVICE FOR ANY BLACK WOMAN WHO MAY BE THE ONLY ONE IN HER WORKSPACE OR THAT MAY NOT HAVE THE COMMUNITY SHE DESIRES
Of course, sign up for The Well! The community is filled with black women from different industries who are also craving community. She also says to not avoid networking even if you’re the only one in the room. It could be a great opportunity to get to know how other people move and operate in your workplace which will eventually get you really far in your career.
