This week on the show I chat with Marline Francois-Madden. Marline is the owner of Hearts Empowerment Counseling Center, a phenomenal public speaker, entrepreneur and bestselling author of The State of Black Girls: A go-to guide for creating safe spaces for Black girls. With over 15 years of clinical experience, she has become a sought-after expert in mental health, trauma, self-care, and girls leadership. In this episode Marline shares with us her journey and how she decided to take the leap into owning her own private practice, why she focuses her brand around specifically helping young women, we dig all into her new book “The State of Black Girls” and she also shares her tips for how we as entrepreneurs can prioritize our mental health.

ON WHAT INSPIRED MARLINE TO OPEN UP HER OWN PRIVATE PRACTICE

Marline began building her brand online while she was in the social work field and realized that her personal brand was starting to gain some traction. Marline also saw that there were limited resources in her community. People were wanting to see a therapist that looked like them but there weren’t any.

WHY SHE DECIDED TO FOCUS HER BRAND AND PRACTICE AROUND HELPING YOUNG GIRLS

She had to think about her past work experience and where she not only felt comfortable but also not burnt out. She realized that she loved working with adolescent girls and millenial women and it’s where she was able to fit in and do good work.

MARLINE’S ADVICE ON PRIORITIZING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHILE RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS

Marline states that you have to remember that you come first over your business. If you are not functioning right then neither will your business. You also have to push past the poverty mindset which often leads us to unhealthy hustling.
